Thinking About Training to be a Piano Tuner?.. Read Georgia's Story
Hi, I’m Georgia ! I did the Piano Technology School’s course at a strange time- 2021 during Covid. We had a great group, from all different backgrounds and musical abilities. After the course I went on to first run my own business, then work at a piano workshop in Macclesfield which mainly focused on restoration work, after which I moved to Forsyths music shop in Manchester as an in house piano technician and on the road tuner, alongside running my own round of tunings.
The course was a great intensive way for me to learn the essentials of tuning, regulation and repairs, as well as how to run a business (before moving on to learn in practice through hours of work and practise to improve upon the skills learnt from Steve and Tabitha!)
For anyone interested in doing this course I would highly recommend it! Learning in a relaxed environment from people with many years experience in the industry, not just in this country but around the world, was an eye opener as to how the world of piano tuning works.
I would recommend using the extra time allowed outside of the course hours to hone the skills learnt- luckily Steve allows for you to come in and do workshop and tuning practise, which is a major benefit that you may not get to the same extent if you decided to learn through an apprenticeship in a shop.
If you have just finished the course and are wondering where to go next, I would highly recommend getting a few hours a week in a piano shop to practise regulations and repairs, as these are the things that don’t come up as often as tuning and are easy to forget!
My overall advice is practise practise practise! There’s no such thing as too much experience!
